Every football manager game teaches the same lesson sooner or later: the club with the biggest budget does not always win the league. The manager who finds cheap good players does. These football manager transfer tips are written for mobile managers on a tight budget, using Golazo Manager's transfer market as the example, but the thinking works in any manager game.

How to find cheap good players: start with your weakest position#

The most common transfer mistake is buying the best player you can afford instead of the player you actually need. Before you search, look at your own team. In Golazo Manager the Transfers page draws your starting eleven on a pitch and makes your weakest spots glow, so you can see at a glance where a new signing makes the biggest difference.

Your budget, the window dates and your eleven. The glowing spot (a 66-rated right back) is the one to fix first.
  • Upgrading a 66-rated full back to a 74 helps more than swapping a 74 striker for a 76.
  • Tap the glowing position to search only for players who play there.
  • Write down your budget before you start. A signing that eats the whole budget leaves nothing for an injury crisis.

Use the transfer filters: fee, wage, age and rating#

A market of thousands of players is only useful if you can narrow it down. Good filters turn "who is out there?" into a short list of realistic targets.

The Find players filters: position, age, fee up to your budget, wage, minimum rating, and who would actually join you.
  1. Fee up to: set it below your full budget. Leaving 20 to 30 percent spare gives you room for a second signing.
  2. Wage up to: wages are paid every week, season after season. A cheap fee with a huge wage is not a cheap player.
  3. Rating from: set the minimum to your current starter's rating plus a few points. Anything below that is not an upgrade.
  4. Age: 21 to 25 is the sweet spot for value. Young players still improve and keep their resale price.
  5. Would join me: switch this on. There is no point chasing a star who will never sign for a second-division club.

Sort by Cheapest and Youngest, not just Best#

The default "Best" sort shows you the players everybody wants, at prices to match. Switch the sort to Cheapest with a sensible minimum rating and the bargains rise to the top. Then try Youngest to find talents who are cheap today and worth much more in two seasons.

Golazo Manager transfer search results with player ratings, prices and weekly wages
Search results show a rating range, the fee and the weekly wage, so you can compare value at a glance.

Look at the rating range, too. A player shown as 76–88 has a wide range: he might be a bargain, or he might be closer to the low end. That is where scouts come in.

Free agents and expiring contracts: the cheapest transfers of all#

  • Free agents cost no transfer fee at all. You only pay wages, which makes them perfect for squad depth.
  • Contract ends finds players in the last part of their deal. Their clubs know they could leave for nothing soon, so the price drops.
  • Check both filters at the start of every window. New free agents appear as clubs release players during the season.

Scout before you spend big#

A player's displayed rating is an estimate until your scouts have seen him. Send a scout to any expensive target before you bid. If the report shows his real level is at the top of the range, you found a bargain. If it is at the bottom, you just saved your budget for someone better.

Check your signing on match day#

The best test of any transfer is the pitch. In Golazo Manager every match plays out in a 3D stadium, so you can watch your new signing and see whether he fixed the weak spot you bought him for.

  • Find your weakest position before you search.
  • Filter by fee, wage, rating and "would join me".
  • Sort by Cheapest and Youngest, not only Best.
  • Check free agents and expiring contracts first.
  • Scout expensive targets before you bid.
  • Keep part of the budget for emergencies.
